When you go to work, you're thinking about the tasks you have to do for the day, a question you need to ask your supervisor, or even who you'll spend your lunch hour talking to. Unless your job is "Safety Manager" you're unlikely to spend much time thinking about what you would do if an emergency occurred at work.
Do you know where your office's first aid kit is or what's in it? From a cut finger to a heart attack, it's not only important but required by law for there to be a well-stocked kit in every office in Bath, NC.
Here are 10 important items that you should be able to find in your kit.
1. Latex Gloves
Gloves are an obvious item because they prevent the transfer of germs. Make sure there are multiple pairs in a large size so that anyone can wear them.
2. Bandages
Cuts are the most frequent injuries at businesses so it's important to have bandages in a variety of sizes and shapes on hand. Check your emergency kit stock regularly. It's easy to quickly run out and forget to replace them.
3. Wound Cleaner
All wounds from big to small need to be cleaned out to prevent infection. Moist towelettes with or without alcohol are convenient but a sealed bottle of water can do the trick for an injury with a lot of debris.
4. Gauze
Gauze is the workhorse of any wound care kit. Gauze can stop bleeding, stabilize a broken finger, or cover a burn.
5. Adhesive Tape
If you run out of bandages, some gauze and adhesive tape can accomplish the same goal. Tape and gauze are best for wounds like a long scratch that is difficult to cover with a bandage.
6. Resuscitation Equipment
A pocket mask or other barrier is important for preventing the spread of germs or diseases in the event that you need to give someone mouth to mouth resuscitation. Hopefully this is a rarely used item so make sure to check the quality and replace it every so often.
7. A Blanket
Every first aid kit needs a blanket but if you live in an area that is prone to tornadoes, hurricanes, or earthquakes, it might be wise to keep a larger stash if floods or high winds are regular occurrences and the staff needs to shelter in place at the office.
8. Scissors
To properly dress a wound, it's important to be able to cut gauze and tape to correct lengths.
9. Tweezers
It's more sterile to try and get a splinter out of your finger using tweezers than trying to use your fingertips. Tweezers might also be used to clean debris out of other injuries, like if someone were to fall and scrape their knee in the gravel parking lot.
10. Splint
Stabilizing a broken bone is necessary to prevent further damage to nerves and muscles. It can also help to reduce someone's pain.
A first aid kit is important for the well-being of everyone in your office. Where you would call an emergency restoration service if your building gets damaged, a well-stocked safety kit provides immediate care until medical help can be reached.
